Use this to start the spring semester at your school library!
Country music artist Roseanne Cash tweets her love for librarians!!!
Very sweet! From the School Library Journal Facebook page.
To all the librarians of the world: I love you very, very much. You saved my life when I was 11.
Are your students socio-economically disadvantaged? Have you heard of the organization First Book ?
First Book is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing new books to children in need; access to books is their mission. All you have to do go to firstbook.org and complete a simple registration of your school. (You need a tax id number from your office.) Periodically, they will email you about book distributions. Apply for what you want from their list of titles using their very simple form. If your application is accepted (all mine have been) you pay only 35 cents per book for postage. The only caveat is that the books must become the property of the students. I see book give-aways in your future!!!! They also have a marketplace where they sell books at very low prices. I got class sets of hardback copies of the National Book Award nominee Sold, by Gloria Welan for about a dollar a copy. The marketplace books do not need to become the property of the students. A friend of mine got copies of Sherman Alexie’s Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian for several hundred kids! It is a great resource.
